MIAMI, Fla. -- The Rev. Calvin Onderdonk Schofield, Jr., 45, rector of St. Andrew's Church here, was elected Bishop Coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida at a special diocesan convention on Nov. 11.

Mr. Schofield, vicar and then rector of St. Andrew's since 1964, was elected on the 16th ballot. When the special convention failed to elect anyone after six ballots on Nov. 4, the election was continued the following week with Mr. Schofield receiving a majority vote in both the clerical and lay orders, as required, on the 15th ballot.

The Rev. William L. Stevens, rector of St. Benjamin's Church, Plantation, Fla., runner-up in the election, proposed an additional ballot to make it unanimous.

Mr. Schofield has accepted his election pending the required canonical consents from the bishops and standing committees of the dioceses of the Church.

As Bishop Coadjutor of the diocese he will succeed Bishop James L. Duncan who has headed the Diocese of Southeast Florida since its formation in 1970. Bishop Duncan has announced his intention to retire Jan. 1, 1980.

Mr. Schofield will head a diocese that includes 30,000 members of 79 congregations in seven counties surrounding Miami.

The bishop-elect was born in Delhi, N. Y. and is a descendant of Bishop Benjamin T. Onderdonk, who headed the Diocese of New York from 1830 to 1861.

Before coming to St. Andrew's, he was curate at St. Peter's Church in St. Petersburg, and chaplain at Florida Presbyterian and St. Petersburg Junior Colleges.

Mr. Schofield is a graduate of Hobart College, Geneva, N.Y., and Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University, New Haven, Conn.

He and his wife, the former Elaine Marie Fullerton, have two children.
