Episcopal News Service. April 19, 1979 [79118]
GREENWICH, Conn. -- The Rev. Thomas Hill Carson, Jr., will be the Executive for Stewardship/Development on the Episcopal Church Center staff, according to an announcement to the Executive Council here today by Presiding Bishop John M. Allin. The appointment is effective July 1.
Mr. Carson has been rector of Christ Church, Greenville, S. C., in the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, since 1964.
As Executive for Stewardship/Development, Mr. Carson will oversee a program that will ensure the development and utilization of the Episcopal Church's human and financial resources for its ministry in the world.
The Stewardship/Development office will act in supportive liaison to the Venture in Mission efforts during the next triennium. The office will also provide leadership as that fund-raising, renewal program provides a basis for a higher level of stewardship throughout the Church.
Mr. Carson's office will assist local congregations through the provinces and dioceses to develop a strong commitment to stewardship in their personal and corporate lives.
The Rev. Henry J. Free, Jr., is the Stewardship Officer in that unit. He conducts diocesan stewardship training programs, coordinates the preparation of Every Member Canvass materials, and serves as a consultant to dioceses on stewardship matters.
A Development Office was set up after the 1970 General Convention, with the late Oscar C. Carr, Jr., as the first officer.
Mr. Carson was born in Wilkinsburg, Pa., in 1926. His B.A. degree in education was earned at the University of New Mexico and he received his M. Div. degree from the University of the South.
Following his ordination as a priest in 1954, he served congregations in Greeneville and Chattanooga, Tenn., before his call to Christ Church in 1964. He has held many positions of leadership in the Dioceses of Tennessee and Upper South Carolina. He has been a clerical deputy to four General Conventions.
During his 15-year tenure at Christ Church, the parish has doubled in membership to its present 2,600 communicants. In 1970 a stewardship program was developed which has eliminated the necessity of an Every Member Canvass every year.
Bishop Allin appointed Mr. Carson to the Cabinet of Venture in Mission in 1976. He has served on the Mission Opportunity Committee of the Cabinet. He also serves as a member of the board of the Episcopal Church Building Fund.
He is married to Mary Jane Sutherland of Nashville, Tenn., and they have three married children and three grandchildren.
