Cheung Consecrated Bishop of Taiwan

HSINPU, Taiwan -- The Rt. Rev. Pui-yeung Cheung was consecrated Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Taiwan on January 6 at the Church of the Advent here.

Chief consecrator was the Rt. Rev. John M. Allin, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. Participating in the service were bishops, lay persons, and clergy from Taiwan and the United States, and from throughout Asia. A delegation from the Roman Catholic Church in Taiwan was present.

The service was bilingual, alternating between Mandarin and English.

Following the service, Bishop Cheung celebrated the Eucharist and all clergy who were present assisted. As the conclusion of the service, a Chinese meal was served by the college where the church is located.

On the following day, Bishop Cheung was formally installed as bishop of the diocese at the Cathedral of St. John in Taipei and that afternoon he presided over the annual diocesan convocation.

He succeeded Bishop James TeMing Pong who retired on January 7 at the age of 68 after nine years as head of the Diocese of Taiwan.

Bishop Cheung, 60, was a canon in the Anglican Diocese of Hong Kong when he was elected to the episcopacy in February, 1979. He had held many diocesan posts in Hong Kong. He holds degrees from the Nanking University and Union Theological College in Hong Kong. He recently spent time in England studying diocesan administration and clergy counseling at Salisbury and Wells Theological College.

The Taiwan Episcopal Church is part of the Episcopal Church in the U. S. but the Hong Kong diocese is part of the Council of the Church in East Asia.

Bishop Pong has retired to his native Hong Kong where he is engaged in parttime work. He has accepted an invitation to spend a month this spring in the Diocese of Newark as visiting assistant bishop.
