Nominations Sought for Church Posts

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Episcopal Church's Joint Committee on Nominations has announced the beginning of its work to provide nominees for certain vacancies on Church bodies to present to the General Convention in 1982, according to the Rt. Rev. Furman C. Stough, Bishop of Alabama.

Bishop Stough, chairman of the 12-member committee, said that the deadline for submitting nominations for the vacancies is Oct. 15, 1981.

Nominations may be submitted by any member of the Episcopal Church. The written consent of the nominee is required, Bishop Stough said. A brief biographical sketch of the nominee must be filed with the committee and any accompanying statement by the nominator is limited to 25 words.

Members of the committee will attend provincial meetings in order to explain the procedures for placing persons in nomination. Committee members who serve as provincial contacts are: I, the Rev. Canon Edward Morgan; II, the Rev. Wallace Frey; III, Bishop Robert Appleyard of Pittsburgh; IV, Bishop Stough; V, Mrs. Mary Durham; VI, Mr. Donovan Worden; VII, Mr. Ralph Spence; VIII, Bishop Matthew P. Bigliardi of Oregon; and IX, Mr. Richard Moss.

Nomination forms, with guidelines, have been sent to bishops, diocesan secretaries, diocesan editors, and Episcopal Churchwomen's publications.

The committee will receive nominations as follows:

  • Ten members -- two bishops, two presbyters or deacons and six lay persons for a term of two General Convention periods on the Executive Council.
  • Twelve persons to serve as trustees of the Church Pension Fund for two Convention periods.
  • One bishop, two presbyters with pastoral cures, two members of theological seminary faculties, and two lay persons to serve for three Convention periods on the General Board of Examining Chaplains.
  • A bishop and a presbyter to be elected to serve on the Anglican Consultative Council for a term of three meetings (a term of five to seven years).
  • Nine persons -- three bishops, three presbyters and three lay persons -- to be elected to six-year terms as trustees of General Theological Seminary.
  • One bishop, one presbyter or deacon and one lay person to be elected for terms of two Convention periods to the Church Deployment Board.
