Pittsburgh -- The Rev. Alden Moinet Hathaway, 47, rector of St. Christopher's Parish, Springfield, Va., was elected Bishop Coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh at a diocesan convention on Dec. 6.
Hathaway was elected on the fifth ballot when he received the required majority in both the clerical and lay orders. The diocese's search committee had presented six nominees and one priest was nominated from the floor.
If Hathaway accepts his election, the consents of the majority of diocesan bishops and standing committees of the Episcopal Church will be required.
The Rt. Rev. Robert B. Appleyard, 63, who has served as bishop of the diocese since 1968, expects to retire after the 1982 General Convention in New Orleans.
Hathaway is a native of St. Louis and has been rector of St. Christopher's Parish since 1972. Previously he served as associate at Christ Church Cranbrook, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and was rector of Holy Trinity, Bellefontaine, Ohio. He was employed by Firestone Tire and Rubber Co., Akron, in 1955-56.
He received his education at Cornell University and Episcopal Theological (now Divinity) School, Cambridge, Mass.
He married Anna Harrison Cox in 1956 and they have three children.
