Analysis Shows Where Clergy Move

New York -- A recent analysis by the Episcopal Church's Church Deployment Office of clergy moves over the past five years shows that two-thirds of the clergy moved to another diocese, while only one-third moved within their diocese.
From an analysis of which clergy moved "upward" -- i.e. to parishes with larger budgets -- the study shows that 61 percent of the clergy who moved to such churches (with budgets of $50,000 or more) moved from outside the diocese.
This information confirms the long standing complaint of bishops and their clergy that diocesan clergy have less chance of being considered by parishes within the diocese. "The figures would seem to be a warning to clergy not to count on intrdiocesan deployment," says the Rev. Roddey Reid, Executive Director of the Deployment Office at the Episcopal Church Center, "but to put their energies and time, if they need to move, in investigating vacancies in other dioceses."
In this connection, Reid notes that the Deployment Office offers, for a fee, the special service to clergy of matching their needs against its list of openings. Forms for requesting such service are printed as part of the Deployment Office's "Positions Open Bulletin," a monthly publication available by subscription.
