Associated Parishes Looking Ahead
Episcopal News Service. June 11, 1981 [81177]
Waverly, Ga. -- Looking backward at its 35 years of service to the Episcopal Church in the interest of liturgy and mission and forward to further service in the years ahead in the interest of church renewal, were features of the recent meeting of the Council of the Associated Parishes for Liturgy and Mission.
The meeting was held at the conference center of the Diocese of Georgia here in mid-May.
An update of the continuing concern of the Associated Parishes for the revival and renewal of the diaconate was written and is available from the Council (3606 Mt. Vernon Ave., Alexandria, VA 22305).
The Council endorsed the proposal of the annual conference of the Diocesan Liturgical and Music Commission Chairmen, calling for the establishment of a resource person for liturgy and worship for the Episcopal Church. This person would carry on a full-time concern for worship in this communion.
The Council also heard from and honored the Rev. John Patterson, former rector of Grace Church, Madison, Wis., and the Rev. Samuel West, both founding members and now serving as honorary members of the Council.
The group became well known for its publications, having to do with eucharist worship, parish organization, the sacraments and worship of the Episcopal Church. It had some influence on the Episcopal Church in preparing for liturgical reform through its conferences held around the country.
A new publication shortly to be available is a brochure on "The Daily Office." Also planned is a revision of their brochure "A Parish Program for Liturgy and Mission." A committee was appointed to begin work on a manual of ceremonial for bishops that will assist in the use of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. A brochure on marriage and family life is also in the works.
Towards the end of the meeting, the Rt. Rev. Frederick W. Putnam, Bishop of Navajoland, one of the honorary members of the group, gave a tribute to Mrs. Vivian Kingsley, who is finishing her third term as president of the Council and the election of officers was held. The new officers are the Rev. Peter Moore of the Diocese of Rio Grande, president; the Rev. Henry Louttit, Diocese of Georgia, vice president; Marianne Kessell of Rio Grande, secretary, and Arthur Jenkins of Washington, treasurer. Capt. Howard Galley, C.A., was elected as the at-large member of the executive committee.
The meeting of the Associated Parishes Council for 1982 will be April 19-23. The theme of the meeting will be "Liturgy and Social Responsibility."
