Notes for the Press (May 27)

Episcopal News Service. May 27, 1982 [82139]

  1. Complete News Room facilities will be operated by the Communication Office of the Episcopal Church Center during the meeting of the triennial General Convention of the Episcopal Church in New Orleans, Sept. 5-15. Accreditation request forms, accreditation guidelines, and hotel (Marriott) reservation forms are available on request from the Press Office, Episcopal Church Center, 815 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10017, or telephone 212/867-8400, ext. 401.
  2. Please help us publicize the telephone number below. The 'Newsphone' (formerly known as Code-A-Phone) may be called for a relatively small cost from anywhere in the continental United States to receive news of the Convention. The message is changed at least once a day (more often if appropriate). Here is the 'Newsphone' information: For News of General Convention Call 'Newsphone' For recorded news summaries, call 504/527-6510 Message changed daily at 6:00 p.m. (New Orleans time) Beginning Sunday, Sept. 5 through Wednesday, Sept. 15
  3. Here is another important telephone number: the trunk line for the News Room at General Convention in New Orleans, including both the electronic and print media representatives. (Be careful not to confuse the 'Newsphone' and News Room numbers. They are the same except for one digit.) To reach the News Room at General Convention, call: 504/527-6500.
  4. The mailing schedule for the Diocesan Press Service in June, July and August will be somewhat irregular, depending on news flow and vacations. We expect to distribute series of press releases when The Blue Book, with its reports and resolutions, is sent to bishops and deputies (perhaps late June). There will be a mailing on June 3 but probably not on June 10 and 17. Mailings will be approximately every other week (or more often) for the remainder of the summer, beginning June 24.
  5. Biographical information on the internationally known speakers at General Convention (see DPS 82111) is available on request through the Press Office at the Church Center. These include Bishop Desmond Tutu, Coretta Scott King, Thomas M. Franck, Bishop Robert H.A. Eames, Bishop H.B. Dehqani-Tafti, Andrew Young, and Jonathan Winters (whose program is sponsored by the Episcopal Society for Ministry on Aging). Bishops Tutu, Eames and Dehqani-Tafti plan to spend several days at the Convention and may be available for interviews. Requests for interviews should be submitted to Press Officer Walter H. Boyd, who will make the arrangements through the appropriate channels.
