Episcopal News Service. September 30, 1982 [82202]

HARTFORD, Conn. (DPS, Sept. 30) -- The newly edited version of Samuel Seabury's journal from 1791 to 1795 was officially released at Diocesan House here at a luncheon held in early September. The Episcopal Church is approaching the bicentennial of Seabury's election and consecration as the Episcopal Church's first Bishop of Connecticut and the first in the United States.

Editor Anne W. Rowthorn of New Haven, titled the journal Miles To Go Before I Sleep. Her initial purpose was to learn more about this man important in our Church's history. (Rowthorn is writing Samuel Seabury's biography which The Seabury Press will publish next March.)

Rowthorn and the illustrator, Jane D. Hooker of Branford, dedicated the book to the Rev. Dr. Kenneth W. Cameron. Cameron first brought the journal to light in 1955 with a mimeographed word for word edition. In Rowthorn's words, Cameron "knows more about Samuel Seabury than any other living human." He is Archivist and Historiographer for the Diocese of Connecticut and is currently working on a reconstructed version of Seabury's lost journal prior to 1791.

The Rt. Rev. Arthur E. Walmsley, Bishop of Connecticut, presented a copy of the book to the bishops of the Episcopal Church at the Sept. 5-15 meeting of General Convention in New Orleans

The journal costs $3.00 (plus 85¢ for handling and postage) and may be ordered from Church Missions Publishing Company, 1335 Asylum Ave., Hartford, Ct. 06105.
