Milwaukee (DPS, Apr. 12) -- On April 9, the Rev. Roger John White formally accepted his election as Bishop Coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee. He had been elected on the seventh ballot at a special session of diocesan council held March 31 at All Saints' Cathedral, Milwaukee. From the first ballot he had polled among the top three in the voting by the 100 clergy and 249 lay deputies.
White, 43, is a native of Leeds, England. He came to the United States for a year as a World Council of Churches Scholar in 1964, then returned to Kelham Theological College, from which he graduated in 1966. Ordained priest by the Bishop of Ripon in June of 1967, White served in England until 1969, when he moved back to the United States and was received into the Episcopal Church.
All of White's ministry in this country has been in the Middle West. He is currently rector of Trinity Church and St. Richard's School in Indianapolis, In. and has served parishes in Olney and Alton, Ill. and in St. Louis, Mo., where he met his wife, Prudence. The Whites have three children, Marcus, 16; Suzannah, 14; and Charles, 12.
In addition to serving on a number of diocesan and provincial committees and commissions, White was a member of the Partners in Mission Consultation Organizing Committee in 1977 and has been a deputy to the last four General Conventions. He is also a contributor to Realities and Visions.
Although his consecration is not expected to occur until late September, White will begin his service in the diocese August 1. The Rt. Rev. Charles Gaskell, who has been Bishop of Milwaukee since 1974, has announced that he will retire in May of 1985. At that time, White will become the tenth bishop of Milwaukee.
The Diocese of Milwaukee comprises the southern third of the state of Wisconsin. It has 12,822 communicants in 64 parishes and is served by 127 clergy.
