Software on the Way for Parishes, Dioceses

Episcopal News Service. February 7, 1985 [85030]

NEW YORK (DPS, Feb. 7) -- At least 15 dioceses will soon begin using computer programs prepared under the supervision of the Finance Department of the Executive Council; similar programs will be available for parishes. The programs will run on most modern mediumsize microprocessor computer systems and include complete accounting functions as well as provide for most administrative needs.

This software conforms to the standard accounting manual required by the canons, and will produce customized as well as standard reports. In addition to providing for complete "funds accounting" as used by the Church, it will maintain selective mailing lists, contribution records, and a "talent bank" of persons listed by various categories. The program is modular and "menu-driven," to provide for the greatest possible flexibility. It will be operable by persons unfamiliar with computers, since detailed instructions for each function will display on the screen at the touch of a "help" key.

Specifications and details were organized by the Rev. John Schultz, director of management information systems at the Episcopal Church Center. A coalition of 15 dioceses participated in development of the system to insure that their needs are met by the new programs.

The parish program, although similar to the diocesan program in its accounting functions, also has provision for most parish office needs, except for word-processing which is easily available elsewhere. Parishes will be able to obtain this program in March for $600. Unique in the program development is the fact that each diocese and parish may make its own choice of equipment -- the program can be adapted to most microprocessors. For an additional fee, each user may attend training seminars and receive telephone support.

Software development was awarded by competitive bidding to Congregational Communication Services of Alexandria, Va. Bruce Pettit, formerly vice-president of the Church Pension Fund and principal in the Alexandria firm, is in charge of the development and production of the new program.
