Cathedral Ministers At Pan Am Games

INDIANAPOLIS, (DPS, July 2) -- Christ Church Cathedral, here, has been chosen to receive a Pan America Partners Certificate by the organizing committee of the Tenth Pan American Games and designated by the Episcopal Church's Office for Hispanic work as a "branch office" during the games.

Since Ecuador was unable to host the games as scheduled, the Cathedral's Sesquicentennial Committee invited the Rt. Rev. Adrian D. Caceres, Bishop of Ecuador, to be bishop-in-residence at the cathedral during the final week of the games. In addition to attending the soccer competition and the closing ceremonies, Bishop Caceres will preach at two major Cathedral events. On Aug. 19, a choral evensong with the men and girls' choirs will provide a setting for him to share his thoughts on church growth and Evangelism. Sunday, Aug. 23, a bilingual Eucharist (Spanish and English) will be celebrated with special music for the occasion. Caceres will also be the keynote speaker at a special meeting of the diocesan evangelism committee.

In addition to Caceres's visit and with the help of the Rev. Herbert Arrunategui, Hispanic Ministries staff officer at the Episcopal Church Center, the cathedral will add a Hispanic chaplain to the staff during the games. The chaplain will be available to Spanish-speaking guests to respond to pastoral needs which might develop, will serve three days in the athletes' village and be the celebrant at a weekly celebration of the Holy Eucharist in Spanish. The chaplain's office will be well stocked with tracts and prayer books in Spanish.

Members of the cathedral parish family will be involved in the Pan Am ministry as well. Some of the cathedral guides have been in classes learning the necessary Spanish to conduct bilingual tours of the cathedral. Meanwhile, other cathedral volunteers are finalizing plans to serve up a variety of coffees, South American style, weekdays on the cathedral lawn.
