TORONTO (DPS, June 9) -- The Ven. Douglas Blackwell was elected Suffragan Bishop of Toronto on June 4 in an election that attracted attention beyond the diocese, because a woman was on the short list of candidates. Blackwell is the executive assistant to the Archbishop and director of communications of the Diocese of Toronto. He won on the fourth ballot. Also a candidate was the Rev. Mary Alice Medcof, Incumbent at St. Bede's, Scarborough, and a member of the diocesan Executive Committee.
