NEW YORK (DPS, Oct. 13) -- The Middle East has, in recent years, been one of the world's great problem areas. Many Church groups on both congregational and parish, or diocesan, levels, plan study and discussion groups on the Middle East. There have been many requests for resources lifting up the Church's position on the problems of the Middle East. Two major resources for study and discussion groups have been prepared at the Episcopal Church Center under the supervision of the Rev. Rhoda Treherne-Thomas of the Diocese of New York and are now available:
The Middle East Today: An Annotated Bibliography lists selected recent literature and audiovisual materials. It is intended to help group leaders decide which of the many available resources on the Middle East are best suited to their needs. The bibliography, which will be updated periodically, currently includes more than 70 entries. The entries are grouped both topically and individually, with a brief description including intended audience, cost, and supplier for each entry.
Middle East Speakers Directory, including more than 80 listings, helps group leaders identify informed speakers on topics relating to the Middle East who are available in their geographical areas. This resource provides a rundown on each speaker's experience in the Middle East, his or her areas of specific expertise, and general information about availability and fees. Local chapters of organizations routinely providing speakers are included as well. This resource will also be updated periodically.
All dioceses in the United States have received copies of these resources. However, group leaders and others wishing to order their own copies should write to: Mission Information Office, Episcopal Church Center, 815 Second Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10017, Attn: Middle East Project.
