Something Old, Something New....

Episcopal News Service. July 6, 1989 [89128]

NEW YORK (DPS, July 6) -- Things are changing in the news department. As most of you know, we are reshaping the news service and by September hope to launch a revised version. It will be called the Episcopal News Service.

Some of the coverage provided by the Episcopal News Service will look familiar. Releases will include the same broad coverage of diocesan, national, and international events that the news department has provided in the past -- the people and events that give the Episcopal Church its unique character.

There will be some obvious changes, however. A new format will make it possible to bring more variety, a range of items from a single paragraph to essay-length background pieces and profiles. And we are looking into expanding the photo service to include the kind of photos you can use to illustrate issue-related stories.

The essential purpose of the news service won't change but, as we expand our networks, we will strive to provide you with a much better selection of material. There is so much happening in the Episcopal Church, and in our Church's relationship with the rest of the Christian family, that we must dig deeper to tell that story well.

We will need your help to do that. Now is the time to share your ideas with us. Many members of Episcopal Communicators shared ideas at their Williamsburg meeting. But we would like to have input from the entire communication network of the Church. What kind of material do you need? Of material you have received, what has been particularly useful? What kind of news service do you think the Church needs at this time in its history?

Give me a call [1-800-334-7626: or in New York State, 1-800321-2231], or write a short critique; together we will build a news service that is livelier, that is more useful to communicators in the Episcopal Church.

By the way, we still have an opening for an Assistant News Director; if you have a candidate, let us know immediately.
