Diocesan Press Service. August 4, 1970 [90-1]

QUITO, Ecuador -- Funeral services for Miss Rebecca du Priest, lost in an Ecuadorian jungle mud slide, were held on July 25 with interment in the cemetery of the village of Puyo located near the spot where she lost her life.

Miss du Priest was one of a group of 20 Virginia young people of the Episcopal Church who were engaged in a summer work project in Ecuador. The Diocese of Southwestern Virginia has a Companion Diocese relationship with the Church in Ecuador.

On July 16 she and Miss Susan Talbott were killed and three others were seriously injured when the jeep in which they were riding was hit by a mud slide on a jungle road.

The body of Miss Talbott was returned to her Virginia home for burial. The body of Miss du Priest was not found until more than a week later through the efforts of the Ecuadorian army.

The Companion Diocese project in Ecuador ended on July 27 when the young people from Virginia returned home. During the month of August a group of five Ecuadorian young people will work in the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia.
