Conference Explores Means of Furthering Companion Diocese Programs

Episcopal News Service. August 7, 1990 [90202I]

The Companion Diocese Network of the Episcopal Church's World Mission Unit met with leaders of companion diocese programs from June 21 to June 23 to explore various means for expanding the diocesan leaders' chosen linkages. The eight network representatives and thirteen diocesan companion diocese leaders were joined at the Christian Retreat Center in Dickinson, Texas, by three persons from partner dioceses outside the United States. Network presentations included how to establish a companion diocese committee and how to move from bishop-to-bishop relationships to person-to-person bonds. The role of mutual communication and sensitivity in a successful companion relationship was stressed, and examples of fruitful exchanges were provided. Currently there are 66 companion relationships between U.S. dioceses and overseas partners. For information on companion diocese relationships, contact the Rev. Mark Harris, Office of World Mission, Episcopal Church Center, 815 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10017.
