Episcopal News Service. November 21, 1991 [91236A]
The bishop of the Diocese of Pennsylvania announced on November 8 that the diocese, founded in 1784, will soon have its first cathedral. The Rt. Rev. Allen L. Bartlett, Jr., speaking at the Church of the Saviour in West Philadelphia during his diocesan convention, said that the convention site itself will become the cathedral church on January 1, 1992. "This church will become a 'house of prayer for all people,' a center of unity for this diocese, a place of programs that will strengthen the ministries of us all," Bartlett declared. The Very Rev. John Hardwick, current rector of the church, will become the first dean of the Cathedral Church of the Saviour. Located on 38th and Market Streets, the church was built in 1903 in an Italian Romanesque style. The 74,000-member Diocese of Pennsylvania comprises the counties of Philadelphia, Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery, and Chester.
