Lutheran, Episcopal and Roman Catholic bishops in New Mexico renewed a covenant pledging mutual prayer, fellowship and study during their third Pentecost gathering in June. Under the theme "Diversity in Unity: The Next Steps," the bishops and diocesan ecumenical officers led discussions about future cooperation. The Rev. Earnest Falardeau of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Fe reminded the gathering that, in ecumenical matters, the churches are in a time of "steep ascent," when progress may be more difficult "simply because the ground we seek to conquer is all the more important for the successful outcome of our endeavors." Canon Bruce Williams, ecumenical officer for the Episcopal Diocese of the Rio Grande, said that "the number of such covenants in the United States is growing -- and we are thrilled to be part of this pioneering work."
