Thomas Hilton Teal, 50, author and publisher of Teal Christian education materials, died August 1 of brain cancer in Boulder, Colorado. In 1968, the Teal family formally launched their publishing business to provide a more structured, tradition-based curriculum for the church's young people. Under Teal's guidance, the original material was expanded and developed into a program which has benefited over 6,000 congregations and institutions worldwide.
The Rev. Efrain Huerta is the new executive director of the Center for Hispanic Ministries for Province 7 on the campus of the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas. Huerta is priest-in-charge of San Juan Apostol mission in Ft. Worth, Texas, and has been a member of the diocesan executive and Hispanic committees. A native of Mexico, he was a regional coordinator within the Diocese of Mexico before coming to the United States and earning his master of divinity degree from the Seminary of the Southwest in 1981.
The Rev. Samuel L. Edwards has been appointed permanent director of the Episcopal Synod of America (ESA). Edwards was a principal drafter of the Bishop's Letter that led to the ESA's formation in 1989 and he served as a member of the ESA legislative body until his appointment as acting director in March of this year. Edwards is a native of North Carolina and an honors graduate of Brevard College, the American University and Nashotah House Seminary.
