The summer sun reflecting from the new copper roof of St. Mark's Cathedral in Seattle is stunning commuters on the nearby interstate. Tour directors are even calling to ask about "that big building on the hill," according to local news reports. The roof is part of a $3 million restoration of the building, "quite a gift to Seattle," according to one columnist who cited the many contributions of the church to the community. And the curious are even showing up a church services, according to diocesan sources. "Whatever any of us may say or feel about its role in this diocese, I now see that the role of our cathedral -- in fact, all of our churches -- in the larger community is indisputably clear: to 'lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim, 'til all the world adore his sacred name,'" wrote diocesan editor Diane Walker in her column in the Episcopal Voice.
