Health Insurance Mandate Passed in Virginia
Episcopal News Service. February 9, 1994 [94022G]
Delegates to the annual council of the Diocese of Virginia, January 2829, voted to change diocesan canons to mandate that any parish which now provides health coverage for its paid staff must use a diocesan plan. The change passed on a voice vote with a handful of delegates dissenting. Though some parishes with young, healthy clergy may initially pay higher premiums, diocesan leaders convinced the majority of delegates that the long-term benefits of the diocesan plan outweighed any initial disadvantages.
