(ENS) Bishop Allen Bartlett of Pennsylvania recently announced that he will ask the November 3-4 diocesan convention to approve the election of a bishop coadjutor. In a letter distributed to the diocesan standing committee, he said that "for almost 10 years it has been my privilege to serve among you in this remarkable diocese, and I continue to enjoy this ministry. The time does come, however, when it is appropriate to begin planning for a transition to new leadership. That time is now at hand." Bartlett was consecrated on February 13, 1986 and became diocesan bishop in February 1987 upon the retirement of Bishop Lyman C. Ogilby. He turned 66 years old on September 22. In his column for the October issue of the diocesan newspaper, he said that he had been planning for a transition for two years. "Although I have made no decision as to the exact time of retirement, it would be some time after the General Convention [which meets in Philadelphia in 1997]," he said.
