Installation of Bishop Browning in Paris

PARIS, France -- The Rt. Rev. Edmond Lee Browning was installed as Bishop-in- Charge of the Convocation of American Episcopal Churches in Europe at the American Pro- Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity here on October 10. In charge of the installation service was the Very Rev. Sturgis Lee Riddle, dean of Holy Trinity.
Bishop Browning was formerly Bishop of the Diocese of Okinawa which is to become a part of the Nippon Seikokai, the Holy Catholic Church of Japan, in 1972. His appointment to the European post, in which he represents the Presiding Bishop, the Rt. Rev. John E. Hines, is the result of a proposal to establish a joint Church of England - Episcopalian headquarters on the Continent which was agreed to at a conference held in April, 1970, at Canterbury.
Concelebrating the Eucharist at the service of installation with Bishop Browning was the Rt. Rev. John Satterthwaite, the recently appointed Church of England Bishop of Fulham (Northern and Central Eirdpe) and Gibraltar (Southern Europe).
Bishop Satterthwaite received a commission from the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, authorizing him to officiate in the American Episcopal Churches on the Continent. Concurrently, Bishop Browning received commissions from the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of London enabling him to officiate in the Church of England jurisdictions in Europe.
Clerical representatives from the Anglican, Old Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and Roman Catholic Churches attended the historic service of installation. The American Embassy in Paris was represented by the Hon. Perry H. Culley, Minister plenipotentiary and vestryman of the Cathedral. The British Embassy was represented by Mr. Halsey Colchester, Counselor.
