(ENS) In a January 4 service opened by the call of a conch shell and Hawaiian chant, the Rev. Canon Richard Sui On Chang returned to the Diocese of Hawaii -- as its diocesan bishop. Chang served as rector of a parish on Kauai and was executive officer of the diocese when Edmond Browning was elected bishop of Hawaii in 1976. He joined Browning at the Episcopal Church Center in New York when Browning became presiding bishop in 1986. Browning was the chief consecrator at the service in St. Andrew's Cathedral in downtown Honolulu. Rain had been falling all day but the sun appeared at the end of the two-hour service, just in time for a Chinese lion dance for good luck performed in front of the new bishop on the steps of the cathedral.
