Archbishop of Canterbury to be at Trinity Institute

Diocesan Press Service. December 15, 1971 [97-7]

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Michael Ramsey, and the Metropolitan of Surozh, the Most Rev. Anthony Bloom, will be the speakers at the General Conference of the Trinity Institute, January 24-26, 1972, to be held at the Riverside Church in New York City.

The Conference will open with a con-celebration of the Eucharist at 8:00 p.m. January 24, at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre in Lincoln Center, with the Archbishop as con-celebrant and preacher.

The Rev. Dr. Robert E. Terwilliger, director of the Institute, said that the Beaumont was engaged because it was built for theatre-in-the-round, providing an opportunity for liturgical participation.

The Conference theme is "The Charismatic Christ. " It will deal with the upsurge of interest in Jesus as evidenced in the "Jesus Movement."

The Archbishop of Canterbury has chosen the subject, "The Charismatic Christ, the Church, and the Priest." Metropolitan Bloom will speak on "The Charismatic Christ, the Christian, and the Cosmos."

Dr. Terwilliger said that 300 reservations had come in before the Conference was announced. This means a record number of Episcopal clergy is expected and the Riverside Church was needed to accommodate them.

Besides the lectures, the Conference will offer a Eucharist on January 25 at which the Rev. Michael Marshall, Vicar of All Saints', Margaret Street, London, will preach. He opened the General Conference last year with a sermon preached in Alice Tully Hall.

On Tuesday afternoon, Metropolitan Bloom will conduct a forum on spirituality.

Tuesday night, the Institute has bought out the house for GODSPELL and is offering the tickets on a first-come basis to the registrants.

Archbishop Ramsey has a number of engagements in New York during the week he will be here. He will celebrate in the mornings at churches that have sent him invitations.

On Sunday, January 23, he will make ecumenical history with a sermon at 3:00 p.m. at St. Patrick's Cathedral (Roman Catholic), New York City. He will preach at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine that morning.

Archbishop Ramsey will also meet with members of the Anglican-Roman Catholic Consultation. On Monday noon, he will lunch with a group of Episcopal Bishops who will be attending the Conference.

On Thursday evening, January 27, the Archbishop will be at St. Mark's, New Canaan, Conn.

He will be interviewed on the TODAY SHOW on NBC-TV, Monday, January 24, and will also tape an interview with Edwin Newman for the SPEAKING FREELY program to be broadcast over WNBC-TV in New York and some 50 educational. television stations in the near future.
