News from the American Bible Society
Diocesan Press Service. March 11, 1963 [VIII-13]
Urging every Christian to read the Crucifixion and Resurrection passages from the Gospel of St. John on Easter day, the American Bible Society has reprinted these passages in a pocket-sized book entitled, "He Is Risen. " Copies are available for $3 per hundred in either the King James or the Revised Standard Version in English or the Reina Valera Revised Version in Spanish. A single copy of the Easter portion will be sent free on request; the Society is located at 450 Park Avenue, New York 22, N. Y.
"By seeing to it that everyone receives both an opportunity and an invitation to read this Easter message," the Society suggests, "we can remind ourselves and our fellow men that God still loves the world and that in the resurrected Christ He has given us 'His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.'"
The American Bible Society reports that contributions from vacation church schools in 1962 enabled the society to distribute scriptures costing more than $125,000. Many children went without candy and toys so that boys and girls in other countries might have copies of the Bible.
"The English Bible in America" is now in its second printing. A bibliography of editions of the Bible and the New Testament published in America between 1777 and 1957, the book is edited by Margaret T. Hill, the American Bible Society's secretary for historical research. This reference book has been widely used by seminaries, libraries, and researchers.
Located at 450 Park Avenue, the Society's library contains the most extensive collection of Holy Scriptures in the Western Hemisphere--more than 22,000 volumes in over 1,100 languages. A handwritten Wyclif New Testament, a facsimile copy of Tyndale's New Testament, an original copy of the Coverdale Bible, and a first edition copy of the King James Version are among the treasures on permanent display. Open from 9:30 a. m. to 4:30 p.m., arrangements can be made in advance for guided group tours.
