Cuban Students Aided
Diocesan Press Service. May 8, 1963 [X-16]
Some 24 Cuban refugee students have or are now receiving a college education because of funds from the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief. These students are now attending 12 different colleges and universities throughout the United States.
The student program has been set up to give supplementary assistance to the students, for in almost every case, the college or university has given a tuition scholarship. In many cases, local churches also give help. The average amount given from the Scholarship Fund has been $700 per student. The National Brotherhood of St. Andrew has contributed generously to this work.
Through the efforts of the College and University Division of the National Council, Episcopal college chaplains throughout the country have approached the administration of their college, and through their efforts have received tuition waivers from over 32 colleges and universities. This will provide excellent opportunities for the placement of qualified Cuban refugee students, however, each students, in order to accept these scholarships must have supplementary help from the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief.
Inasmuch as there are 15,000 Latin American students studying under full scholarships from Moscow, our efforts still tend to seem minor by comparison.
