Missionary from Brazil to Japan

Diocesan Press Service. June 5, 1963 [XI-12]

The Rev. Lourenco Takeo Shimanuki, of Sao Paulo, Brazil has been given a unique missionary assignment. The Church in Brazil, with the help of the Overseas Department, is sending Mr. Shimanuki to Japan, the country of his origin, for two years.

During this time, he will assist in the preparation of future immigrants who plan to make their home in Brazil. His long experience will enable him to teach these Japanese nationals the rudiments of Portuguese, the national language of Brazil, and the customs of the country, as well as the nature of the life and work of the Church.

Part of Mr. Shimanuki's family immigrated from Tokyo to Brazil, along with many others, in the early years of this century. He, himself, completed his education in Brazil: first at the Southern Cross School in Porto Alegre, and then at the Theological School of that city. In January of 1934, he was ordained priest in the Episcopal Church of Brazil, and has since served the Church in the state of Sao Paulo.

During his stay in Japan, Mr. Shimanuki will also visit brothers, sisters, relatives and friends whom he has not seen since his childhood.
