Lichtenberger Honored

Diocesan Press Service. June 10, 1963 [XI-24]

NEW YORK, --- Presiding Bishop Lichtenberger was cited June 10 as "one of the most talented and consecrated churchmen of the Christian faith of our time."

In special noonday services in the Chapel of Christ the Lord in the Episcopal Church Center, 815 Second Avenue, Bishop Lichtenberger was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree from St. Augustine's College, Raleigh, North Carolina.

The degree was presented to him on behalf of the Rt. Rev. Richard Henry Baker, Bishop of North Carolina and chairman of the board of trustees of St. Augustine's College. Bishop Baker had accepted the degree in absentia for Bishop Lichtenberger at the college's 96th annual commencement exercises on May 27 in Raleigh.

In the ceremony a citation was quoted in which the college's president, Dr. James A. Boyer, called Bishop Lichtenberger "one of noble spirit, humanitarian principles, and a possessor of compassionate understanding."

"This is shown," Dr. Boyer said, "by your invoking and invigorating the faith of mankind through celebrated leadership" in meeting controversial issues head-on.
