National Council's Report on Presiding Bishop's Health

Diocesan Press Service. October 10, 1963 [XIV-1B]

The National Council at its meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio Oct. 10-12 issued a report on the hospitalization of Presiding Bishop Lichtenberger. The report was made to the 28 member National Council after consultation with the Presiding Bishop's physician.

The 63 year old head of the Episcopal Church suffers from phlebitis as a late complication of a hernia operation that he underwent on August 27. He has been confined to Greenwich Hospital, Greenwich, Conn. since Oct. 2 where he is undergoing anti-coagulant therapy.

Though his physician has prescribed "complete immobilization for a period of not less than two weeks," Bishop Lichtenberger is reported to be making satisfactory progress. He is expected to return to his New York office by the middle of November.

The report notes that "phlebitis is not infrequently experienced after surgery" and is not related to Bishop Lichtenberger's disability, that of Parkinson's Syndrome, which was announced last spring.

Presiding at the National Council meeting in the Presiding Bishop's absence was the Rt. Rev. John B. Bentley, the Council's first vice- president and director of the Overseas Department.
