African Anglicans Take Radio Course

Diocesan Press Service. November 8, 1963 [XV-11]

Three Anglican leaders-one each from Ghana, Uganda, and Nigeria-are meeting with nine other African Christian leaders at Kitwe, Northern Rhodesia this fall to study techniques of radio script writing. Eight African countries are represented at the training workshop. They are Ghana, Uganda, S. Africa, Nyasaland, Basutoland, Tanganyika, Southern Rhodesia and Nigeria.

When the three month script writing course is completed in December, Kwame Amamoo, Anglican from Ghana, will return to his country where he will act as program organizer for Radio Ghana. Amos Balikurungi from Uganda will return to the new studio of his church to help produce programs for Radio Uganda as well as Uganda Television. The Anglican priest from Nigeria, The Rev. Justus Olumoya, will continue his parish ministry with added emphasis on Christian broadcasting over government stations in Nigeria.

The script writing course is the first step in preparing African Christian leaders to take advantage of the tremendous opportunity to communicate Christian teachings via government, commercial, and church owned radio. The course is designed to show how the broadcasting media can be utilized most effectively. Emphasis is being placed on the rudiments of script writing and production.

The All Africa Conference of Churches is sponsoring the course with aid from the Literature-Literacy Committee and RAVEMCCO, the Radio and Visual Education Mass Communication Committee. Both committees are members of the Division of Foreign Missions of the National Council of Churches.

Inexpensive transistorized radios which operate from batteries have made broadcasting one of the most practical and important ways to reach the many people of Africa who are cut off from communication with the rest of the world due to illiteracy and a lack of electrical current. Now that both audience and air time are available, radio becomes one of the most important tools employed by the church.
