Bishop Harris Retires After 19 Years

Diocesan Press Service. January 7, 1964 [XVII-16]

The Rt. Rev. Bravid Washington Harris ended 19 years as Bishop of Liberia January 6. He will be succeeded by the Rt. Rev. Dillard Houston Brown, who has been Bishop Coadjutor since 1961

In recognition of Bishop Harris' service to the Church in Liberia, National Council members at their December quarterly meeting lauded the 68-year-old bishop for his "sensitive imagination and bold courage" in responding to "new and unforseen events in the life of Liberia and West Africa" with "characteristic quick understanding and firmness."

Bishop Harris recognized the need for African leadership so he established parochial day schools, strengthened high schools and re-established Cuttington College and Divinity School. The college is today considered the best institution of higher learning in West Africa. The college had been closed in 1929 and it was reopened in 1949.
