Moore's Consecration

Diocesan Press Service. January 7, 1964 [XVII-9]

Presiding Bishop Lichtenberger will consecrate the Very Rev. Paul Moore, Jr., as Suffragan Bishop of Washington January 25, at 10 a. m. in the National Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, Washington, D. C.

Co-consecrators of the Suffragan Bishop-elect will be the Rt. Rev. John P. Craine, Bishop of Indianapolis, and the Rt. Rev. William F. Creighton, Bishop of Washington.

Dean Moore, 43-year-old dean of Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis, Ind., since 1957, will be the first to hold the suffragan bishop post in the nation's capitol. As assistant to Bishop Creighton, he will work closely with the diocesan urban program, race relations and the clergy.

The Washington diocese includes the District of Columbia and the part of Greater Washington that stretches into Maryland.

Dean Moore has become nationally known for his work in the urban ministry at Christ Church Cathedral. In 1958 he founded Cathedral House where a neighborhood program has been conducted and he has written a book on the urban ministry, The Church Reclaims the City, which will be published in January by The Seabury Press, official publisher of the Episcopal Church.

The Suffragan Bishop-elect served as a captain in the Marine Corps during World War II. As a platoon leader, he received serious injuries in action during the Tulagi-Guadalcanal campaign. For his courage he was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, and the Navy Cross.
