115 Priests Now Serving as Chaplains
Diocesan Press Service. September 11, 1964 [XXIV-14]
The Episcopal Church now has 115 priests serving as military chaplains in this country's Armed Forces, according to the Rev. Robert J. Plumb, D. D., executive secretary of the Armed Forces Division of National Council.
This marks the first time since denominational quotas were established during World War II that Episcopal quotas are filled. There are 48 chaplains in the Army; 37 in the Navy, and 30 in the Air Force. Three Episcopal chaplains are currently on duty in South Vietnam.
Attrition due to retirement and completion of tours of duty creates a few openings from time to time but the applicant for active duty can expect a six month's or one year's delay.
Veterans Administration hospitals are now served by 10 full-time and 14 part-time chaplains.
