Personnel Reference Service Set
Diocesan Press Service. October 7, 1964 [XXV-1]
A qualified, dedicated layman who wants to work for the church often has difficulties in flading a job and, at the same time, jobs at all levels often go begging for the lack of qualified applicaats. Priests with a specialized ministry also have the same difficulties. To remedy this situation, a Profesaional Personnel Reference Service, which will bring the interested people and the available jobs together, has recently been established within the Division of Christian Ministries of National Council.
As an Initial step, the Service, which is under the direction of Dr. Reuben H. Gross, a layman with considerable research experience and seminary training, is compiling a register of all persons presently employed in professional positions in the church and in church-related Institutions, persons interested in and qualified for such employement, and young persons desiring to begin a career.
Dr. Gross has stated that this register "should lead to the development of patterns of career service. These patterns in turn should facilitate the establishment and maintenance of professional standards of education and training."
Based on the register, the Service will compile a file of current church employees who are interested in changing their positions and of professional vacancies in order to match qualified people and available openings. This is designed to promote the most efficient use of the church's human resources by encouraging the movement of qualified people across parish, diocesan and provincial lines to the position where their talents and experience are most needed, acoording to Dr. Gross.
The new Profession Personnel Reference Service is just that. It is a referral service, not an employment service, and negotiations between employer and applicant will be conducted independently of the Service. This Service, thus, will promote the use of qualified persons in the church.
