Morehouse Disappointed

Diocesan Press Service. November 2, 1964 [XXVI-17]

Clifford P. Morehouse, president of the House of Deputies, labeled the sessions of that house during the 61st General Convention "disappointing and frustrating."

Mr. Morehouse, who earlier had been re-elected to serve his third term as president of the house of Deputies, said, "We have had deputies leave because of their frustrations. I do not condone this. And yet those of us who remain feel this has not been a great convention."

Among action completed by the house during the convention: the Rev. Canon Charles M. Guilbert was elected secretary; the House provided for streamlining its ponderous opening sessions; it was agreed that not more than nine legislative days should be scheduled at the next convention.

Other action included: concurrence with the Bishops in reaffirming a 1961 resolution calling for a "Common Bible"; concurrence to admit the Missionary District of Spokane as a Diocese; provision for adding saint's days not now included in the Church's Book of Common Prayer; Resolution on Race (from House of Bishops) accepted by heavy majority; resolution giving top priority to urban work by calling upon Executive Council units to provide materials to all dioceses and to set up pilot urban projects.
