Executive Council New Name
Diocesan Press Service. November 2, 1964 [XXVI-29]
The National Council, which governs the Episcopal Church between Conventions, was renamed the Executive Council by the 61st General Convention.
This action was begun at the request of the National Council itself because of the feeling that its work is more than "national" in scope and in order to avoid confusion with such bodies as the National Council of Churches of Christ.
During the second week of Convention, 21 persons were elected for terms on the Council.
Elected for three year terms were: Bishop DeWitt of Pennsylvania, the Very Rev.
Gordon E. Gillett, Peoria, Il., L. Dale Pederson, Eugene, Ore., and the Hon. Herbert V. Walker, Glendale, Calif. Elected for six year terms were: Bishop Burrill of Chicago, Bishop Murray of Alabama, Bishop Richards of Central America, the Rev. Sherman E. Johnson, Berkeley, Calif., the Rev. Stephen R. Davenport, Harrods Creek, Ky., the Rev. Edward E. Tate, Atlanta, Ga., Charles Crump, Memphis, Tenn., Charles F. Bound, Mount Kisco, N.Y., Albert C. Jacobs, Hartford, Conn., John P. Causey, West Point, Va., and Prof. Wilber G. Katz, Madison, Wis.
The Convention also named to Council for three year terms, on the nomination on the Triennial Meeting of the women of the Church: Mrs. Robert H. Durham, Detroit, Mich., Mrs. John H. Foster, San Antonio, Tex., Mrs. William J. Howard, Washington, D. C., Mrs. John Marshall, Chevy Chase, Md., Mrs. Donald Pierpont, Avon, Conn., and Mrs. Harold Sorg, Berkeley, Calif.
