Bayne First Vice-President

The Rt. Rev. Stephen F. Bayne, Jr., director of the Overseas Department of the Executive Council, was named first vice-president of the Council , Dec. 9. That post had been vacant since Nov. 1, when the Rt. Rev. John B. Bentley retired after 20 years as director of the Overseas Department and first vice-president of the Council.

Also during the Council's organizational meeting--its first since the October General Convention--the administrative program arm elected six Council members to serve for one year on the Standing Committee, along with the President. They are Bishop Bayne; the Rt. Rev. Nelson M. Burroughs, Bishop of Ohio; the Rev. Joseph S. Young, rector of St. John's Church, Norman, Okla; Dr. Lindley M. Franklin, Jr., Executive Council treasurer; Prime F. Osborn of Jacksonville, Fla.; and Mrs. Donald W. Pierpont of Avon, Conn.

The Council's 21 new members, elected by the Church's triennial convention, were given these assignments:

Home Department -- The Rt. Rev. Robert L. DeWitt, Bishop of Pennsylvania; the Rev. Stephen R. Davenport, Jr., Harrods Creek, Ky.; Mrs. William J. Howard, Washington, D. C.

Overseas Department -- Mrs. John H. Foster, San Antonio, Texas, chairman; the Rt. Rev. George M. Murray, Bishop Coadjutor of Alabama; the Rev. Edward E. Tate, Atlanta, Ga.; L. Dale Pederson, Eugene, Ore.

Christian Social Relations -- The Rt. Rev. David E. Richards, Missionary Bishop of Central America; the Rev. Dr. Sherman E. Johnson, Berkeley, Calif.; Charles F. Bound, Mount Kisco, N. Y.; Mrs. Pierpont; Mrs. Harold Sorg, Berkeley, Calif.

Christian Education -- Dr. Wilbur G. Katz, Madison, Wisc.; the Hon. Herbert V. Walker, Glendale, Calif.; Mrs. Robert H. Durham, Detroit, Mich.

Promotion -- The Very Rev. Gordon E. Gillett, Peoria, Ill.; John P. Causey, West Point, Va.; Mrs. Howard.

Finance -- Dean Johnson, Mr. Bound, Mr. Causey, Charles M. Crump of Memphis, Tenn., Judge Walker, Mrs. Foster.

General Division of Research and Field Study -- The Rt. Rev. Gerald F. Burrill, Bishop of Chicago, chairman; Dr. Albert C. Jacobs, Hartford, Conn.

General Division of Women's Work -- Mrs. Durham.

General Division of Laymen's Work -- Mr. Pederson, chairman.

The Presiding Bishop also appointed standing committees on Ecumenical Relations, World Relief and Inter-Church Aid, and the Good Friday Offering.
