BEGIN PANAMA STUDENT CENTER
The Episcopal Church in Panama is among the first in Latin America to build a student center to minister to those at a government university.
Ground was broken for the new $40, 000 center, adjacent to the campus of Panama University, on February 14. The funds were raised and donated by the Diocese of North Carolina, which is a companion diocese with the Missionary District of Panama and the Canal Zone. The Rt. Rev. Thomas A. Fraser, Bishop of North Carolina, participated in the groundbreaking ceremonies along with the Rev. R. Heber Gooden, Bishop of Panama and the Canal Zone.
Bishop Fraser was also the featured speaker at the district convocation held February 13.
CUSTODIANS FOR THE LORD
A woman dies and in her will leaves 14 specific bequests to Episcopal-related organizations. The residue of her estate goes to The Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America (the church's corporate name) for a trust fund to further its missionary expansion in this country and overseas. Why?
In a covering letter from her lawyer, he explains that she "and her sister, who pre- deceased her, had worked out a plan years ago that they should consider themselves only custodians for the Lord of whatever worldly goods they might accumulate and that the bulk of the estate of the survivor would be bequeathed to Episcopal-related charities."
As the woman, herself, stated in her will she was the last custodian of her estate and made these bequests "in memory of my parents and in the name of their children."
