Philadelphia Sets Post-Ordination Study
Diocesan Press Service. March 8, 1965 [XXX-16]
"It is ridiculous today to hold that a minister, a servant of the church, can be educated once and for all as a young man," Dr. Nathan M. Pusey, president of Harvard University, said when he addressed the Theological Education Dinner during last Fall's General Convention. Dr. Pusey said "He will need to have repeated opportunities throughout his career to catch up with the recent best thought affecting his enterprise and opportunities again and again, both to renew his spiritual strength and to venture for himself into fresh thought".
Noting this concern, the Very Rev. Edward G. Harris, dean of the Philadelphia Divinity School, has announced a new program designed to provide for post-ordination study. Two clergymen will be invited for each semester to spend that semester in residence at the seminary, enabling them to undertake a non-degree course of independent study. This would involve reading and research in areas of their own selection and approved by the faculty which would provide guidance and conferences.
The seminary will provide four fellowships in the amount of $750 each to meet the costs of registration, tuition, room and board (at the rate for a single man), medical fee and books.
To be eligible, a clergyman must secure a leave of absence from his parish so that he may take up residence at the Seminary. In the event the clergyman is married and wishes to be accompanied by his family, he will have to assume the additional financial responsibilities for housing and food.
Additional information and application forms may be obtained from the Dean of the Seminary, addressed at 4205 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, Pa., 19104. Applications for the first semester (Sept. 7 - Dec. 22) must be received before May 1. Applications for the second semester (Jan. 17 - May 14, 1966) must be received no later than Sept. 1.
