Episcopal Committee Helps 81 Students

Diocesan Press Service. May 7, 1965 [XXXII-7]

Eighty-one persons from any countries of the world received specialized training, or higher education, through the Episcopal Church's Committee On Overseas Scholarship Assistance in 1964 reported the Rev. Claude L. Pickens, Jr., S. T. D., secretary of the Committee.

Because of extra help from trust funds and grants 10 more students were able to participate in the program than had participated in 1963.

Several firsts were a part of the 1964 program. The exchange students arrived in August, before schools opened, and took part in an orientation program and were able to live with American families. The first Polynesian was sent to St. Andrew's Theological Seminary in Manila for further training. The first Dyak from Borneo is attending Virginia Seminary. The first exchange visitor to study in the Executive Council's Department of Research and Field Study is among this group.

The secretary also reported that this program needs to be developed further in certain areas. More and more overseas requests are asking that their clergyman have experience in an American parish. This has been done in several cases already with success and it is hoped that more parishes will make themselves available to these visitors.
