Capital City Parish Clergy Meet
Diocesan Press Service. June 7, 1965 [XXXIII-12]
Nearly 100 Presbyterian and Episcopal clergymen from 45 state capitals gathered at Washington Cathedral from May 11 to 14 for a conference on "The Ministry of Word and Sacrament to Men in State Government". Twenty-nine Episcopal priests from capital parishes attended.
The conference provided a forum for consideration of common problems faced by men who minister to state government officials. Sponsored by the National Presbyterian Center and Washington Cathedral, it was one of the first such conferences held in the United States.
Sessions were held at St. Alban's Episcopal Church on the Cathedral grounds, except for visits to the Senate-House Restaurant at the Capitol and the Department of Defense.
Speakers included: Sen. Edward Muskie, Democrat from Maine; Hodding Carter, Pulitzer Prize-winning editor of the Delta Democrat Times in Greenville, Miss.; Dr. Royce Hanson, associate professor of the School of Government and Public Administration at American University in Washington; The Rev. H. B. Sissel, secretary for National Affairs of the United Presbyterian Church; The Very Rev. Francis B. Sayre, Jr., dean of Washington Cathedral; and Frank Cummings, assistant to Sen. Jacob Javits (R-NY) and minority labor counsel to the Senate Committee on Labor and Public Welfare.
