Guatemala Clinic Begun

Diocesan Press Service. August 9, 1965 [XXXIV-5]

An idea, a few hundred dollars, and many hours of work - the result is the Clinic for Women and Children, Guatemala City.

The Clinic was started by interested members of St. James' Parish, Guatemala City, both English and Spanish speaking, a Guatemalan pediatrician, and the Rev. Adrian Caceres, rector of St. James'. With $100 donated by a member of St. James' and $400 donated by a group of interested women in Minnesota, people pitched in to paint several rooms in the parish building and equip them. Three local physicians donated one afternoon a week each, and one trained nurse, one stenographer and two lay women complete the staff. Drugs have been donated by local physicians and drug firms.

Since the clinic open in February 143 children and 30 women have been treated and about 125 pounds of CARE milk are distributed each week to those families who have children registered at the clinic. In addition to medical treatment, each person under treatment is visited by one of the lay women who checks on the family and makes certain that the milk is being used properly.

The clinic is located in a poverty ridden district of the city and it is hoped that this free clinic will make a substantial contribution to the health of the women and children of the area.
