Nigerian Church Union Postponed
Diocesan Press Service. December 10, 1965 [XXXVIII-7]
The inauguration of the United Church of Nigeria which was to take place in Lagos on Dec. 11 - 12 has had to be postponed.
The reason that the union of Anglicans, Methodists and Presbyterians in the African nation is delayed is because lay leaders of two Methodist churches in Lagos are not anxious to participate and have applied for an injunction restraining the Methodist Church from transferring their churches and assets to the new body.
The Church Union Committee has announced that it would meet in February to re-examine the position and see if a new date can be fixed for the inauguration.
In a statement issued in Lagos, the Committee called on all members of the uniting churches "to exercise Christian charity and restraint, and to avoid all expressions of ill-will and recriminations regarding this delay and to work and pray in the confidence that the Holy Spirit will guide us all and lead us into a truly united Church in Nigeria.
