Whereas, the Rt. Rev. W. Fred Gates soon completes 45 years as an able Priest and Bishop in God's Church; and

Whereas, his common sense, good humor, and unwavering faith have proved contagious and supportive for hundreds of his fellow Tennesseans; and

Whereas, his diverse gifts include those of persuasive proclaimer of the faith, sensitive pastor, sound teacher, and skilled administrator of diocesan finance, stewardship, and youth and campus ministries; and

Whereas, in contrast to his militant protection of diocesan funds, he has consistently reflected personal generosity and warmth toward his friends in this House, across his Diocese, and--in particularly rare and delightful ways--to his brother Tennessee Bishops; therefore be it

Resolved, That we offer hearty thanks to God for Fred Gates and his gracious wife, Jane, and extend them loving good wishes as they open a new chapter in their life together.

The Committee moved the adoption of Resolution B-28, the resignation of Bishop Gates, effective January 1, 1983, for reason of age, with addition.

Seconded by the Bishop of Tennessee.
