Resolved, That this 71st General Convention ratifies the division of the Diocese of Michigan into two parts so that the continuing Diocese of Michigan shall constitute the Episcopal Church within the limits and bounds of the civil counties of Hillsdale, Lenawee, Monroe, Jackson, Washtenaw, Wayne, Ingham, Livingston, Oakland (except for Holly Township), and Macomb; and that portion of Clinton County south of Price Road, State of Michigan; and so that the new diocese shall constitute the Episcopal Church within the limits and bounds of the civil counties of Alcona, Alpena, Arenac, Bay, Cheboygan, Crawford, Genesee, Gladwin, Gratiot, Huron, Iosco, Lapeer, Midland, Montmorency, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle, Roscommon, Saginaw, St. Clair, Sanilac, Shiawassee, Tuscola, that part of Oakland County composing Holly Township, and that part of Clinton County north of Price Road; and be it further

Resolved, That this 71st General Convention receive the following evidence supporting this resolution:

  1. A verified copy of the resolution duly adopted by the Diocese of Michigan, committing the Diocese to its division and to the formation of a new diocese;
  2. The consent of the Bishop of Michigan;
  3. Map of the existing and proposed continuing and new dioceses;
  4. Certification concerning the number of churches and the number of clergy remaining in the Diocese of Michigan and the number of churches and clergy constituting the new diocese;
  5. Certifications concerning the financial ability of the continuing Diocese of Michigan and of the new diocese;
  6. The proposed temporary name of the new diocese;
  7. The proposed time table;
  8. Ratification of this resolution by the Bishop and Standing Committee of the Diocese of Michigan;
  9. Certificate of the Chancellor of the Diocese of Michigan that all aforesaid documents have been duly executed, are accurate, and are entitled to full force and credit; and further that all of the appropriate and pertinent provisions of the Constitution and Canons of The General Convention of The Episcopal Church in the United States, and the Constitution and Canons of the Diocese of Michigan, have been fully complied with in respect to this submission.

House of Bishops

The Committee on Admission of New Dioceses presented its Report #1 on House of Deputies Message #26 on Resolution C031 (Division of the Diocese of Michigan) and moved concurrence.

The members of the Committee invited Bishop McGehee, Bishop Mayson, and the Bishop of Michigan to join them on the platform. The Presiding Bishop asked that Ms. Shirley Gordon, wife of the late Bishop William Gordon, Assistant Bishop of Michigan, join the platform group. The Bishop of Michigan acknowledged the presence in the gallery of a delegation from the state of Michigan.
