Text:

Resolved, That the Executive Council hereby endorse the following resolution entitled "Deploring the Resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan" which was passed by the NCCC Governing Board on May 12, 1978:

Governing Board of the National Council of Churches of Christ notes with concern:

  1. the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan in many areas of the nation;
  2. the repeated evidences of the Klan's prejudice against and attempts to oppress Blacks, Jews, Roman Catholics, and foreign-born Americans; and
  3. the Klan's reliance on tactics of falsehood, intimidation, terror and violence in the guise of Patriotism.

We call on our member churches and all other Christians and people of good will to oppose the evils of the Ku Klux Klan. We affirm that activities such as those of the Klan are in contradiction to our understanding of the Christian faith. We commit ourselves and call on all Christians to witness to the members as well as the victims of the Klan in behalf of the God of love, who is concerned for the life, freedom, and well-being of all people.
