Whereas, We have spent these days of June 11-15, 1990, in the sunny splendor of the San Joaquin Valley witnessing the diversity of its culture and the theology of its people, along with the pastoral concern for the Bishop of San Joaquin, we rejoice with our sisters and brothers in their accomplishments and commend the leadership they show in cross-cultural ministries to the Hispanic, Hmong, Laotian, and Filipino communities; and Whereas, We rejoice with them over the many homeless and handicapped children placed through Family Connections; and Whereas, Mr. Lewis "Scoop" Beardsley and his staff welcomed us warmly to the Retirement Community of Bliss Grove, now under construction, as well as to the Conference Center open to all as a place of love, support and inspiration; therefore be it Resolved, That we, the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, and its Presiding Bishop, extend our love and concern to this family of God and thank them for our warm welcome to their midst and for their support of our work and the National Church. Whereas, John C. Goodbody served the Episcopal Church Center as Director of Communication from early 1970 through 1980; and Whereas, Prior to this assignment he was the President of the Seabury Press in New York and former Vice President of Colonial Williamsburg; and Whereas, His lifelong interest and career in communication and his commitment as an Episcopal layman lasted into his retirement in South Carolina, where, with his wife Harriet L. Goodbody, he co-edited the Diocesan newspaper, Jubilate Deo; and Whereas, John faced issues with honesty while maintaining a deep concern for people everywhere; therefore be it Resolved, That the Executive Council, meeting in Fresno, California, June 11-15, 1990, in thanksgiving to God, express its appreciation for the life and faithful ministry of John C. Goodbody, and that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to his widow. Resolved, That the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, meeting in Fresno, California, send greetings to the Very Rev. James R. Gundrum, and assure him of our great love for him, and our prayers that he may know the peace, grace and comfort of God during this time of illness and always. Resolved, That the Executive Council, meeting in Fresno, California, June 11-15, 1990, express its appreciation to the managers and staff of the Sheraton Smuggler's Inn for their efforts to provide for our needs and comfort under the adverse circumstances of remodeling and renovation. Resolved, That the Executive Council, meeting in Fresno, California, June 11-15, 1990, in thanksgiving to God, express its appreciation for the life and faithful service of the Rev. Dr. H. Boone Porter, Editor of The Living Church, and convey their best wishes for joy and fulfillment in his retirement. |
