Resolved, That Executive Council, meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, June 15-19, 1992, express its anguish and sorrow at the outbreak of violence in Los Angeles over the acquittal of four police officers in the Rodney King case; and be it further

Resolved, That the Council commend the ministry of "presence" by the Presiding Bishop in his decision to go to Los Angeles in the wake of the riots and for his longstanding leadership in holding up the issue of racism for the whole Church; and be it further

Resolved, That the Council commend Bishops Borsch and Talton and other religious and community leaders for their efforts during and after the tragedy and extend its prayers to the people of the Diocese of Los Angeles; and be it further

Resolved, That the Council recognize that this tragedy is symptomatic of widespread racism that exists in our society, including the Church, which requires the reflections and deep deliberations of all members of this Church; and be it further

Resolved, That this Council commit itself to joining the Presiding Bishop in a leadership role in addressing racism during the life of this triennium, including making a report about its work on this issue to the 1994 General Convention; and be it further

Resolved, That the Council call upon all commissions and committees of the General Convention and this Council, and all dioceses and congregations to respond, to the crisis of racism through efforts of understanding, education, tolerance, reconciliation, healing, prophetic witness and love as this Church is called to live out the commandments of our Lord Jesus Christ; and be it further

Resolved, That the Secretary send copies of this resolution to the persons named as appropriate.
